Overview

The Ignite Racing Speed Boat #99 looks super sleek & fast even sitting in the box. However, I've been let down by toy-grade RC boats consistently in the past, experiencing performance that doesn't come close to matching the name or appearance of the craft. Will this one follow the trend?

The boat comes as a fully ready to run package with a standard-sized 9.6V battery and a 4- to 5-hour wall charger. An outrigger three-point hydroplane design, the center hull holds all of the important bits, including the motor and water-tight battery compartment. The two miniature "sponson" hulls on the sides up front are for stability in the water. Let's go ahead and see how well (or poorly) the boat runs.

Conclusion

Ah! It's good! What a breath of resh air. Ignite RC has put together one of the best-performing toy-grade boats ever, in a fully ready to run package with a rechargeable battery, at a very reasonable price. I was all raised eyebrows & smiles with this boat, right up to the point where the battery ran out. I'm surprised they're sticking with the very, very old NiCd (nickel cadmium) battery type instead of superior NiMH (nickel metal hydride), but ultimately it's the low capacity of the pack, combined with the pretty decent motor power, that puts a cap on the fun. The good news is that the boat uses a very common, standardized battery size and connector, so you can get extra spares like this pretty cheaply, and keep the recharge cycle going.
